Champawat is a beautiful town as well as a nagar panchayat located in the Champawat district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is also called as the administrative headquarters of Champawat district. Mythological concept says that this is the place where the Kurmavtar (the turtle incarnation of Lord Vishnu) actually took place. When we go back into the history, we find that Champawat was formerly known as the capital of the Chand dynasty rulers. The best of this time was the Baleshwar Temple built by the Chand rulers in the 16th century. It is an awesome monument with the presence of marvelous stone carving works.
Champawat was also the home to the Champawat Tiger. This place is well situated at an altitude of about 1,610 meters above sea level. It is largely spread over a geographical area of 1,613 sq km. Its district is a part of eastern Kumaon Division of Uttarakhand. Moreover, it is well bounded by Pithoragarh District, Udham Singh Nagar District, Nepal, Nainital District and Almora District. Champawat district was also known as the destination as a part of Almora district. It was given an independent identity in the year 1997.
Champawat district as well as town is believed to be the beautiful source and origin of religion plus culture of Uttarakhand. Even in the ancient time, this region was ruled by Chand dynasty s mentioned above. It has been named after the daughter named as Champawati of King Arjun Deos. This ancient township is popular for its natural beauty as well as temples such as Nagnath Temple and Baleshwar Temple. Well, other notable sightseeing attractions include the Ek Hathiya Ka Naula and Pithoragarh Fort. There are prime attractions too which are in the form of ancient testimonies as pillars, manuscripts and archaeological testaments. These testimonies date back to the period of Mahabharata.
You must also explore the Barahi Temple of Devidhura, Vanasur Fort of Vishung, Tarkeshwar Mandir of Champawat, Baleshwar Mandir of Champawat and Sapteshwar Mandir of Sipti. The weather of this township is very pleasant and remains the same through out the year. Tourists also love to visit the places such as Narsinh Danda, Hinglaj Devi Temple, Karanteshwar Temple, and Hidimba Ghatothkach Temple. It is not just a historical marvel of Kumaon but it also provides beautiful sight of terraced fields and valleys. You can reach Champawat by air, road and railway transport. It depends upon on your preference and availability.
